As Australia’s leading retailer maintaining the edge on product innovations is their key mantra. Therefore when it came to offering canvas printing to the general public they sought to be the first to market with a quality offering.

The Challenge

Katie Page, Gerry Harvey’s wife and Managing Director of Harvey Norman, saw an opportunity just waiting to happen when sent a picture produced by Cromer based company Canvas Art.

Introducing a new product line that allowed anyone to have their own image printed to canvas was the next big thing. If the launch pad was to be Harvey Norman and Domayne Photo Centers, house hold names with 160 Australian stores then they just needed a technology partner to help make it happen.

The Solution

Workstream Solutions advanced ArtSpeed technology was used to devise an innovative new in-store and online product for Harvey Norman and Domayne customers that allowed them to upload their own digital photographs and design wall mounted canvas artwork to be hung in their homes.

Katie and her team established a new customer focused brand called My Masterpiece and Workstream built the self-service MyMasterpiece.com.au website that incorporated online design, options for special photographic effects and filters, as well as secure credit card payment.

  • MyMasterpiece is Harvey Norman’s number one product for 2006. Dependant on market demand turnover is expected to be in the realms of $20m annually.
  • The product range, of varying sized canvases and photo print styles, enjoys healthy retail margins of up to 43%.
  • Harvey Norman utilised pre-existing Fuji photo-lab terminals across their 160 stores which meant there were no initial technology set-up costs, or additional staff resource requirements.
  • A canvas supplier was sourced to fulfill orders which again meant no fulfillment set-up costs to the retailer.
  • In-store ordering was facilitated at each Harvey Norman and Domayne store to allow shoppers to upload their digital photos and process orders using a unique store login, managed by store staff.
  • In addition, out-of-store sales were achieved by directing customers to the MyMasterpiece.com.au website where they could purchase directly over the internet.
